Search and Rescue (SAR) is a vital community service dedicated to finding and providing aid to people who are lost, injured, or in distress in the outdoors. In British Columbia, these operations are primarily carried out by highly trained volunteers who remain on call 24/7 to respond to emergencies in challenging terrain and weather conditions.
Nelson Search and Rescue (NSAR) serves the rugged West Kootenay region. Our team is composed of dedicated professionals and community members who volunteer their time to ensure the safety of those exploring our backcountry, waterways, and local trails.
Our Team & Expertise
The strength of NSAR lies in the diversity of our membership. Our roster includes outdoor professionals, Search Managers, and Avalanche Technicians who bring industry-level credentials to the organization. This high level of internal expertise allows us to maintain a culture of continuous mentorship, where experienced members transfer vital industry knowledge to new responders.
To ensure peak operational readiness, our team meets twice monthly to refine technical skills and stay current with evolving safety standards. These sessions allow us to function as a cohesive, efficient unit during high-pressure responses.
Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) Certification
Every operational member of NSAR must hold a Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) certification—the provincial standard for SAR responders in British Columbia.
During their initial year, Members in Training (MITs) undergo a rigorous 75-hour program designed to provide the skills necessary for safe and efficient operations. This training is integrated into our monthly exercises, ensuring that even our veteran members remain proficient in fundamental rescue techniques.
The GSAR curriculum includes:
- Search Operations: Initiation, progression, and termination of tasks.
- Navigation & Survival: Advanced map and compass skills and backcountry survival.
- Technical Skills: Rope work, tracking, and helicopter safety.
- Field Tactics: Sweep searches, closed grid searches, and shoreline safety.
- Evacuation: Safe extraction of subjects from remote environments.
Advanced Specialized Capabilities
Beyond the foundational GSAR certification, NSAR members pursue advanced Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) courses to provide specialized rescue services tailored to our local geography. Our team maintains certifications in several critical disciplines:
- Mountain & Technical Rescue: Rope Rescue (Team Member & Leader) and Search and Rescue Management.
- Winter Operations: Organized Avalanche Rescue and Advanced Tracking (Track Aware).
- Water Safety: Swiftwater Rescue Technicians and boat-based response.
- Leadership: Ground Search Team Leaders and specialized Search Managers.
Through a commitment to rigorous training and professional standards, Nelson Search and Rescue stands ready to assist our community and visitors whenever the call arises.
